I picked up CSI: Dark Motives for the Nintendo DS back in 2004, a Ubisoft release that came out not long after the system launched. It was part of that early wave of games trying to figure out what the dual screens and touch controls were really good for, and this one aimed straight at fans of the TV show looking for a portable detective fix.
You play as a rookie investigator, taking on a series of murder cases by examining crime scenes screen by screen, collecting evidence like fibers and shell casings, and then using the lab tools to analyze everything. The touch screen is key for dusting for fingerprints, comparing bullet striations, and piecing together DNA samples. Interrogating suspects is a core part of the process, where you present evidence to break their alibis. The pacing is deliberate; you can't rush, or you'll miss a clue and hit a dead end. It feels like doing real, methodical police work, and closing a case gives a solid sense of accomplishment.
