Game Overview

Defender of the Crown came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Cinemaware. It was a pretty ambitious title for its time, trying to bring a cinematic, strategy-heavy experience to a console mostly known for action games. You take control of a Saxon knight trying to reclaim England from Norman rule after the death of Richard the Lionheart.

You control your knight on a map of England, moving your armies between territories to conquer them through turn-based strategy. The main objective is to unite the country under your banner by capturing all the lands. Signature mechanics include leading your troops in large-scale battles, engaging in one-on-one jousting tournaments for prestige, and sometimes launching a solo raid on an enemy castle to swing a sword in simple combat. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty can be punishing if you make a wrong move early on. It feels like a calculated, sometimes lonely struggle where every decision carries weight.
