Play Defender Online

Zipping back and forth over a scrolling battlefield, blasting aliens before they abduct civilians—pick your ship carefully though; some turn on a dime but explode if you sneeze on them. The two-player mode’s pure chaos, and those neon city levels make the old arcade formula feel new again.

Game Overview

Defender on the GBA is a slick little remake of the arcade classic, but with enough tweaks to feel fresh. You’re still zipping left and right over this looping landscape, blasting aliens before they snatch up the helpless humans below—except now you’ve got ship options. Some are faster but flimsy, others pack heavier firepower but handle like a brick. Took me a few tries to settle on one that didn’t get me killed immediately.

The main XGP mode throws in six levels with different backdrops, from dusty canyons to neon cityscapes, and the two-player link mode is chaotic in the best way. But if you’re feeling nostalgic, there’s also a pixel-perfect Classic mode and XG, which is basically the original with a fresh coat of paint. The sprites are chunkier and more detailed than the arcade’s, but the panic of watching aliens drag away your last human? Yeah, that’s still very much intact.
