Desert Assault came out in 1991 as an arcade cabinet release from Data East. It was part of that wave of isometric shooters that tried to stand out from the side-scrolling crowd, offering a different angle on the run-and-gun action that was everywhere at the time. You didn't hear about it as much as some other titles, but it had a presence if you were dropping quarters into anything that looked like military chaos.

You control one of two commandos fighting through enemy bases in a desert. Your goal is to rescue prisoners while mowing down waves of soldiers, jeeps, and occasional tanks. The isometric perspective means you're always firing on a diagonal, which changes how you aim and dodge incoming fire. You pick up better weapons as you go, like shotguns and flamethrowers, and can even jump into abandoned enemy tanks to clear the screen. The pace is relentless; enemies pour in from all sides, and the challenge is in managing the crowd while pushing forward. It feels frantic and a little disorienting, but satisfying when you blast your way through a tight spot.
