Dragon Crystal is one of those early SEGA Master System games that somehow got lost in time—which is a shame, because it’s basically a roguelike before roguelikes were cool. You wake up in this weird dungeon with nothing but a sword, and suddenly every step matters. The floors rearrange themselves, potions could heal you or poison you, and those little blob monsters? Yeah, they’ll ruin your day if you’re not careful.

What I love is how it doesn’t hold your hand. You’ll die. A lot. But each run teaches you something—like maybe don’t eat the glowing mushrooms right away, or that scrolls with unreadable text might just save your life. The turn-based combat feels slow at first until you realize every move is a gamble. One wrong step into the wrong room, and suddenly you’re surrounded by things that want to turn you into a stain on the dungeon floor.

It’s got that classic SEGA charm, too—simple sprites but weirdly atmospheric, like the whole place is alive and waiting for you to mess up. If you’ve got patience for old-school punishment and love that "just one more try" feeling, Dragon Crystal still holds up surprisingly well. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the snakes.
