Dragon Fighter came out on the NES in 1990, published by SOFEL. It was one of those late-era action games that tried to mix things up, blending a standard fantasy adventure with a surprising transformation mechanic. You don't see many games from that time that completely change genres halfway through.
You control a knight who explores a large, interconnected castle, screen by screen. Your main goal is to rescue a princess, which involves fighting monsters with your sword, collecting keys to open doors, and gathering three pieces of a magical crest. The real hook is that once you collect all the crest pieces, your character transforms into a dragon for the final stage. The game shifts from a side-scrolling action platformer to a horizontal shoot 'em up, where you breathe fire at incoming enemies. It's a tough, sometimes unforgiving game, with limited continues and enemies that respawn quickly. Navigating the castle and finally unleashing the dragon's power makes the entire journey feel rewarding.
