Dragon Quest (J) is one of those old-school RPGs where you just walk into the wilderness and hope you're strong enough to survive the next fight. The first hour is mostly talking to villagers, grinding slimes outside town, and slowly piecing together where to go next.

It's simple—no fancy mechanics, just turn-based battles and a world that feels small at first but opens up as you get stronger. The Dragonlord seems impossibly far away when you start with a wooden stick and 3 HP, but that slow crawl from weakling to hero is weirdly satisfying.

Some parts haven't aged well—the random encounters get brutal, and without a guide, you might wander aimlessly for hours. But there's charm in how straightforward it is. You either love the grind or quit before reaching the first castle.
