Game Overview

Dragon Quest on the NES is where it all started—this little RPG basically invented the genre as we know it. You’re some random hero (who looks suspiciously like a guy in pajamas) tossed into a world where everyone expects you to save them from an evil dragon lord. Classic.

At first, you’re just smacking slimes in fields for pocket change, but before long, you’re recruiting weirdos like a sassy princess and a grumpy old knight. The combat’s simple—pick "Fight" and hope for the best—but there’s something weirdly satisfying about slowly grinding your way to being strong enough to take on the big bad. Just don’t forget to save at the king’s castle, or you’ll regret it.

It’s clunky by today’s standards, but you can see why people fell in love with it back in the day.
