Dragon Quest VI finally made it West after years of being Japan-only, and honestly? It was worth the wait. This is the SNES version (with a fan translation), and it’s got that classic Dragon Quest charm—turn-based battles, quirky monsters, and a story that starts simple but gets surprisingly deep. You wake up in a small village with no memory, and before long, you’re hopping between two parallel worlds trying to figure out what’s real.

The job system’s the real star here—you can switch classes mid-game, mixing skills to make your party unstoppable. I spent way too much time grinding my hero into a Gladiator before realizing Sages are secretly OP. The pixel art still holds up, too, especially in the dream world where everything’s just a little… off. If you’ve played the DS remake, this version’s a bit rougher around the edges, but there’s something special about the original SNES sprites and music.

Fair warning: random encounters are brutal if you’re not prepared, but that’s part of the old-school appeal. You’ll want to keep a healer handy.
