Dragon Quest VI on the DS is one of those RPGs that just pulls you in with its classic charm. You start off as this amnesiac hero—pretty standard for the series—but the way the story unfolds between two parallel worlds is surprisingly clever. The monster designs are as goofy and lovable as ever, and the job system lets you mix and match classes to build your perfect party (though good luck deciding between a warrior or a mage first).

The DS version keeps the old-school turn-based combat but adds some nice quality-of-life tweaks, like being able to see enemies on the map instead of random encounters. And yeah, it’s in Japanese if you’re playing this ROM, but the menus are simple enough that you can muddle through if you’re determined. The soundtrack’s still a banger, too.

It’s not the flashiest Dragon Quest, but there’s something cozy about grinding through dungeons with that classic blue slime ambush waiting around every corner.
