Dragon's Lair: The Legend came out for the original Game Boy, published by Elite Systems. It was one of those early handheld attempts to bring an arcade property to a tiny screen, trading the laserdisc's fluid animation for chunky sprites and a lot of imagination. You could find it in the bargain bins not long after release, a curious artifact from when developers were still figuring out what worked on the monochrome portable.

You control Dirk the Daring, a knight tasked with rescuing Princess Daphne from the dragon Singe. The game plays out across single-screen rooms; you move Dirk left or right, jump across gaps, and swing your sword at enemies like bats and skeletons. Your main goal is to collect keys to unlock doors and find the princess, but the real challenge comes from the awkward controls and the constant threat of instant death pits or off-screen attacks. It feels stiff and unforgiving, a game where memorization matters more than reflexes. Playing it is a test of patience, a slow grind through a castle that feels more hostile than magical.
