Dragon Warrior III came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed and published by Enix. It was one of the later, more ambitious RPGs on the platform, building on what its predecessors established but offering a much larger world to get lost in.

You start by creating a hero and then recruiting a custom party of three additional characters, choosing from classes like a soldier, a fighter, a pilgrim, or a wizard. Your main goal is to follow in your father's footsteps and defeat the archfiend Baramos. You explore the world screen by screen, engaging in turn-based combat with monsters, delving into multi-level dungeons, and gradually upgrading your gear in towns. The day and night cycle changes which enemies appear and which shops are open, and the class change system lets you reset a high-level character to level one in a new job while retaining some spells and stats, which is great for building a powerful end-game team. The pacing is deliberate, and some of the boss fights require serious grinding or clever strategy. It feels like a real journey, where every new piece of equipment or spell learned is a hard-won victory.
