Play El Fish Online
Create unique fish by mixing traits, release them into a tank, and watch their behaviors unfold in this quirky aquatic simulation from 1993.
El Fish came out in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Maxis Software. It was one of those oddball titles from the early PC gaming days, a time when developers experimented with simulation in ways that didn't always involve cities or theme parks.
You play as a kind of aquatic geneticist, designing fish by mixing and matching body parts, colors, and behaviors. The main goal is to create interesting or viable creatures and release them into a small tank ecosystem to see how they interact. Signature mechanics include splicing traits from a library of options and observing how your creations swim, eat, or sometimes just bump into the glass. The pacing is slow and observational; there's no pressure beyond your own curiosity. It feels like tinkering with a digital aquarium where you never quite know what you'll end up with.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
