Game Overview

Fatal Fury Special (or Garou Densetsu Special, if you're feeling fancy) is that classic SNK fighter where you pick a brawler—Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, Geese Howard, take your pick—and throw down in some seriously flashy 90s-style fights. The controls are simple at first—jab, kick, special move—but then you realize there’s a whole layer of timing and spacing to figure out if you don’t want to eat a fireball to the face.

What I love is how each character feels completely different. Mai’s quick and slippery, Andy’s got those weird ninja flips, and then there’s Tung Fu Rue, who fights like a drunk grandpa but somehow still wrecks you. The two-plane system (jumping between foreground and background) keeps fights chaotic, and landing a desperation move at the last second feels ridiculously good.

It’s not the most balanced fighter out there, but that’s part of the charm—half the fun is figuring out which characters are secretly broken. If you’re into pixel-perfect animations and that crunchy SNK sound design, this one’s a time capsule worth revisiting.
