Play Heroes of the Lance (Europe) Online

Pick from eight Dragonlance heroes, swing swords through gloomy dungeons, and try not to get mobbed by skeletons—just watch out for those janky controls. Better grab a buddy for co-op unless you enjoy dying to pixelated traps.

Game Overview

Heroes of the Lance on the Sega Master System is one of those games that feels like it teleported straight out of a late-'80s fantasy nerd’s dream. You get eight characters from the Dragonlance books—fighters, mages, the whole crew—and dive into this weirdly atmospheric mix of side-scrolling sword swings and dungeon crawling. The first time I played, I got wrecked by skeletons in some crumbling ruins because, yeah, the controls take some getting used to, but there’s something about the pixelated torchlight and chunky spell effects that just sticks with you.

It’s not exactly forgiving—enemies swarm you, traps feel cheap, and good luck figuring out where to go without a guide—but if you’ve got a friend for co-op, the chaos becomes way more fun. The music’s got this eerie synth vibe that somehow makes fighting draconians in a forest feel epic. Definitely more of a nostalgia pick than a smooth modern experience, but if you’re into retro RPGs with rough edges, this one’s worth the frustration.
