Game Overview

Holy Umbrella - Dondera no Mubou!! is one of those weird little SNES gems that never made it out of Japan. You play as this kid who’s just trying to get home in the rain when he stumbles on a magic umbrella—next thing you know, he’s yeeted into some fantasy world and told to fight an evil emperor. Classic JRPG setup, right?

The combat’s simple but satisfying, mixing real-time action with light RPG elements. Swinging your umbrella (which, yes, is also your weapon) feels oddly weighty, and the enemy designs are just goofy enough to keep things interesting. The music’s got that early ‘90s charm too—peppy synth tracks that somehow make battling giant frogs way more epic than it should be.

It’s not the deepest game, but there’s something charming about how unapologetically weird it is. If you’re into obscure retro RPGs with personality, this one’s worth a look.
