Game Overview

Ice Age came out on the Sega Genesis in 1995, published by Fox Interactive. It was one of those licensed platformers that showed up a lot in the 16-bit era, based on the animated film of the same name. The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it has a certain charm that makes it stand out from some of the weaker movie adaptations of the time.

You control the three main characters from the film: Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, and Diego the saber-toothed tiger. Each one has a unique movement ability; Manny can smash through ice blocks, Sid can climb certain walls, and Diego can jump higher and attack with his claws. The goal is to guide a lost human baby back to its tribe, navigating through icy caves, past avalanches, and across crumbling bridges. The game is split into distinct levels with a focus on careful platforming and some light combat. It can be fairly challenging, with precise jumps and enemy patterns to learn. Playing it feels like a solid, if unspectacular, trip through a familiar world.
