Game Overview

Joe and Mac came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, published by Data East. It was part of that early wave of SNES games that felt like a direct port from the arcade, full of bright colors and simple, loud action. You could always count on finding a game like this in the rental store, the kind you'd pick for a Friday night with a friend because it promised immediate, uncomplicated fun.

You control either Joe or Mac, two cavemen trying to rescue their kidnapped tribe women. You move screen by screen through prehistoric levels, clubbing dinosaurs and throwing rocks or bones. The game gives you a few special weapons, like a boomerang or a wheel that spits electricity, which you pick up from defeated enemies. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike suddenly, especially during the boss fights. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes clumsy brawler where the main appeal is the chaotic two player mode.
