I picked up King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie for the Game Boy Advance back in 2005, a Ubisoft release that came out alongside the Peter Jackson film. It was a time when licensed games were a mixed bag, but this one stood out for trying to capture the movie's scale on a small screen. You get two distinct perspectives, playing as both the filmmaker Jack Driscoll and the giant ape himself, which was a neat trick for a handheld title.

As Jack, you navigate dense, screen by screen jungle environments, using spears and bones to fend off creatures like V-Rexes and giant bats. The main goal is survival and rescue, often requiring you to light torches to scare off predators or solve simple environmental puzzles to progress. Switching to Kong changes everything; you tear through enemies and break obstacles with raw power, feeling the heft of each punch. The pacing is tense, with limited resources keeping you on edge, and the difficulty can spike during some of the creature encounters. It feels surprisingly immersive for a GBA game, pulling you into its dangerous world with a constant sense of vulnerability and occasional bursts of primal strength.
