King’s Quest VI picks up right where the last game left off—Prince Alexander is still hopelessly lovesick over Princess Cassima, and after moping around Daventry for months, he finally sets sail to find her. Of course, things go wrong immediately. His ship gets wrecked in a storm, and when he washes up on the Green Isles, he discovers the kingdom’s in chaos: the king and queen are dead, Cassima might be locked up by some shady vizier, and the islands are about to tear each other apart. So, typical adventure game stuff.

You’ll spend most of your time hopping between four weirdly themed islands (one’s basically a giant chessboard, another’s full of monsters straight out of fairy tales), solving puzzles, and trying not to die in hilariously brutal ways—this is a King’s Quest game, after all. The CD version’s got full voice acting, which is great because the dialogue’s actually pretty sharp, and that intro song? Weirdly haunting. Just don’t expect mercy if you click the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Oh, and near the end, you get to choose between two totally different paths to finish the story. It’s one of those rare moments where the game actually lets you decide how things play out.
