Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe, or Kirby Super Star Ultra as it's officially known, came out for the Nintendo DS in 2008. It was developed by HAL Laboratory, the same team behind many of Kirby's earlier adventures. This was a remake of the Super Nintendo classic, Kirby Super Star, and it fit right in on the DS with its bright, dual-screen action and a library full of inventive platformers.

You control Kirby, the pink puffball, as he floats through levels, inhaling enemies to either spit them out or copy their abilities. The main goal changes depending on which of the many included games you pick; you might be racing to stop Meta Knight, hunting for treasure in a labyrinth, or just surviving an arena of bosses. Key mechanics include using the touch screen to activate helper characters or reveal hidden switches, and managing several different power sets, like the sword, cutter, or fire abilities. The pacing is generally breezy, though some of the extra modes ramp up the challenge considerably. It feels responsive and cheerful, a game that’s easy to pick up but satisfying to master.
