Game Overview

Konami GB Collection Vol.1 came out in 1999 for the Game Boy Color, a compilation put together by Konami themselves. It was a solid way to get a few of their earlier Game Boy titles onto the newer color hardware, a common practice at the time to bridge the gap between generations.

You control different characters across four games: Simon Belmont in Castlevania, whipping candles and dodging Medusa heads; a Vic Viper in Gradius, weaving through dense enemy formations; a tennis player in Tennis, volleying back and forth; and a racer in Motorcross Maniacs, jumping and landing tricks. The main objective changes per game, from reaching the end of a stage to winning a match or race. Signature mechanics include screen by screen exploration in Castlevania, power up management in Gradius, and timing based returns in Tennis. The pacing varies, with Castlevania and Gradius offering stiff challenge while Tennis provides a more relaxed change of pace. It feels like holding a little piece of late 90s portable gaming in your hands.
