Game Overview

I picked up Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for the Game Boy Advance back when it came out, a handheld version of the console game developed by Griptonite Games and published by EA. It was one of those licensed movie games that tried to capture the epic battles on a small screen, and for the GBA's limitations, it did a decent job bringing Middle-earth into your hands without too much compromise.

You control one of three characters—Aragorn, Legolas, or Gimli—hacking through enemies across familiar locations from the film. The main goal is to fight through levels like Minas Tirith and the Paths of the Dead, defeating bosses and clearing areas of Sauron's forces. Combat relies on combos and special moves; you build up a meter to unleash powerful attacks, and there's some light exploration for health upgrades and collectibles. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some sections can get repetitive with enemy waves. It feels satisfying to land a full combo and hear that crunchy sound effect as orcs fall.
