Mario 2000 (SMB1 Hack) is a weird little NES romhack that throws Mario into a vaguely futuristic version of his usual stomping grounds. The first thing you notice is how off everything looks—the goombas have this metallic sheen, and some pipes are replaced with what might be conveyor belts or weird tech platforms.

It still plays like classic Mario, but the altered sprites give it this uncanny vibe, like someone dropped the Mushroom Kingdom into a sci-fi B-movie. The level layouts are familiar but just different enough to keep you on your toes, especially when you run into enemies that don’t behave quite like you remember.

If you’ve played the original to death, Mario 2000 (SMB1 Hack) at least makes things feel fresh for a little while, even if it’s mostly just a visual remix.
