Play Mario in Sonic 1 (Somari) Online

Mario sprints through Green Hill Zone tossing fireballs at Badniks, physics feeling just off enough to make every jump and spin-dash hilariously awkward. It shouldn’t work, but somehow plumber-meets-hedgehog chaos clicks.

Game Overview

I first came across Mario in Sonic 1, often called Somari, on the Sega Genesis back in 1994. It was an unlicensed title developed by Hummer Team, one of those oddball hacks that circulated among friends with copied cartridges. The game essentially plops Mario into Sonic’s world, a crossover that felt both bizarre and intriguing for its time, typical of the era’s bootleg creativity.

You control Mario through levels lifted directly from Sonic the Hedgehog, running and jumping through loop-de-loops and past spike traps. Your main goal is simply to reach the end of each act, though you’ll also stomp or throw fireballs at enemies like Motobugs and Crabmeats. The physics are slightly off; Mario’s momentum feels heavier than Sonic’s, and his spin jump replaces the spin dash, making some platforming sections unexpectedly tricky. Despite the jank, there’s a strange charm to bouncing off springs and collecting rings as Mario, and the whole experience manages to be both familiar and freshly absurd.
