Mario & Luigi RPG 2x2, known as Partners in Time in some regions, came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005. It was developed by AlphaDream, the same studio behind the first Mario & Luigi game. On the DS, it made good use of both screens, which was still a fresh idea at the time. The game follows Mario and Luigi, both as adults and as babies, as they travel through time to stop an alien invasion.

You control both Mario and Luigi, switching between them to solve puzzles and fight enemies. Your main goal is to explore areas, defeat bosses, and collect items to progress. The combat uses timed button presses for attacks and dodges, making battles feel active. You also use special Bros. Attacks that require coordination between the characters. The pacing is brisk, with a mix of exploration, light platforming, and frequent enemy encounters. It feels satisfying to pull off well-timed moves and watch the brothers work together.
