Mario Runner came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by a small team and released independently. It was one of those late-era NES games that tried something different with familiar characters, back when the console was still getting new titles but the 16-bit generation was on the horizon.

You control Mario, who runs automatically to the right; your job is to time jumps and duck under obstacles without stopping. The main goal is simply to survive as long as possible across increasingly tricky stages, avoiding pits and enemies while grabbing coins for points.
