Game Overview

Monster Maker III: Hikari no Majutsushi came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996, developed by Sofel. It was one of those late era SNES titles that didn't get much attention outside Japan, a turn based monster raising RPG that felt like a more tactical, slightly darker take on the monster collection genre popular at the time.

You play as a magician who captures, hatches, and trains a team of monsters. Your main goal is to explore the world and its dungeons, screen by screen, to stop a spreading darkness. The signature mechanics are the turn based battles, where the positioning of your monsters on a grid is critical for flanking attacks and avoiding them, and the fusion system, which lets you combine monsters to create new, more powerful ones. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you don't carefully manage your team's strengths and weaknesses. It feels like a slow, thoughtful puzzle where every battle requires your full attention.
