Game Overview

Motobug in Sonic 1 (beta) is an unreleased prototype for the Sega Genesis, developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It surfaced years after the final game's launch, offering a glimpse into Sonic's development during the platform's peak. This early build shows how the team experimented with mechanics before settling on the polished product players eventually experienced.

You control Sonic as he sprints through Green Hill Zone, though the physics feel unrefined; momentum behaves unpredictably, and jumps sometimes fall short. The main goal remains the same: reach the end of the act while collecting rings and defeating enemies. Signature mechanics include screen by screen progression and the spin dash, which is implemented but inconsistently responsive. The pacing is uneven due to bugs, and difficulty spikes from trivial to frustrating without warning. Playing it feels like navigating a rough sketch of a classic, where every glitch reminds you how much fine tuning went into the final game.
