Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword came out on the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by Team Ninja. It was a time when developers were really pushing the hardware, trying to figure out how to make action games work on a touchscreen. This game was one of the more ambitious attempts to translate a console-style experience onto the handheld.
You control Ryu Hayabusa, a ninja on a mission to rescue a kidnapped girl. The core of the game is navigating screen by screen through dungeons and villages, fighting off fiends with your sword and shurikens. You hold the DS like a book and use the stylus for almost everything; a quick slash attacks, tapping an enemy throws a shuriken, and drawing symbols casts ninpo magic. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is demanding, especially during multi-phase boss fights that require precise movement and timing. It feels incredibly responsive when you pull off a perfect combo, like the system is an extension of your own reflexes.
