Play Ninja Ryukenden II - Ankoku no Jashin Ken (Japan) Online

Swing your sword through swarms of enemies, spawn shadow clones (careful—they backfire), and pray you nail those pixel-perfect jumps before the next bird divebombs you off a ledge. Those comic-book cutscenes are still slick, but the game’s out for blood.

Game Overview

Ninja Gaiden II on the NES is one of those games that looks cool until you realize how brutally hard it is. You play as Ryu Hayabusa again, slashing through enemies with your sword, but this time you can create shadow clones—which sounds awesome until you accidentally spawn one at the worst possible moment. The levels are packed with enemies that seem to spawn just to knock you off cliffs, and the bosses? Let’s just say you’ll be memorizing patterns real quick.

The cutscenes still feel ahead of their time, with that dramatic comic-book style the first game nailed. But man, the platforming sections are cruel. One mistimed jump and you’re back at the beginning of the stage. If you loved the original, you’ll either adore this or rage-quit halfway through. Either way, it’s pure NES-era ninja chaos.
