Pocket Bomberman came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Hudson Soft. It was one of those late-era GBC titles that tried to push the hardware a bit further, with brighter colors and more fluid movement than earlier Bomberman handheld entries. It didn't redefine the platform, but it offered a solid, action-focused alternative to the series' usual maze-based multiplayer.
You control Bomberman through a series of side-scrolling levels, jumping across gaps and bombing enemies and destructible blocks. The main goal is to reach the exit in each stage, often by clearing obstacles or defeating a boss. Key mechanics include dropping bombs mid-air while jumping and collecting power-ups that increase your blast radius or give you special abilities, like throwing bombs. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially during boss encounters. It feels chaotic and immediate, demanding quick reflexes and careful bomb placement to avoid your own explosions.
