Pokemon Hyper Emerald is one of those fan-made GBA rom hacks that feels familiar but throws in enough tweaks to keep you on your toes. The early game is classic Pokemon - pick a starter, fight some trainers, grind a bit in the tall grass. But then you notice the wild encounters are different, and some gym leaders have unexpected team compositions.

I remember walking into the first gym thinking I had it figured out, only to get wrecked by a trainer with a type advantage I didn't see coming. The difficulty curve isn't brutal, but it does punish you for autopiloting through battles. You actually have to think about team balance.

The world map stays true to the original Hoenn region, but with enough small changes to make exploration feel fresh. Pokemon Hyper Emerald manages to walk that line between nostalgia and novelty pretty well.
