Pokemon Hyper Ruby feels like a familiar GBA adventure at first, but there's something different about the pacing. You start in a slightly tweaked version of the usual hometown, and the early routes have this odd mix of standard Pokemon and some you wouldn't expect to see this early.

I remember grinding against wild Poochyenas for way too long before realizing the gym leaders' teams were shuffled around. The third gym had a Grass-type specialist where I expected Electric, which completely wrecked my water-heavy team. Had to backtrack and catch a Fire-type I'd ignored earlier.

The colors pop more than the original Ruby, but some sprites look a little off, like they were upscaled weirdly. Pokemon Hyper Ruby isn't a huge overhaul, but the small changes keep you on your toes if you've played the originals too many times.
