Pokemon Old White Version is one of those GBA ROM hacks that feels familiar but still throws in some surprises. You start in a small town with the usual professor speech, but the region layout and early Pokemon choices are just different enough to keep you guessing.

The first gym leader actually gave me trouble because the type matchups weren't what I expected. I remember grinding my team in the tall grass for way too long before realizing I could just catch something new to counter them. That's the charm of it - it plays with nostalgia while making you rethink old strategies.

Some of the sprite work is rough in places, but the new Pokemon designs are surprisingly solid. The overworld music loops a little too much though, so I ended up playing most of it muted with my own playlist.

If you've played the official games to death, Pokemon Old White Version offers a fresh enough twist to feel worthwhile.
