Game Overview

Pokémon Ranger: Batonnage is one of those DS games that makes you wonder why more people don’t talk about it. Instead of battling, you’re drawing loops around wild Pokémon with the stylus to capture them—which sounds simple until a Pikachu starts zipping around like it’s had three too many energy drinks. The Batonnage twist lets you call back your captured Pokémon for quick assists, like using a water-type to put out fires blocking your path. It’s chaotic in the best way.

What really stuck with me were the little moments—like when a stubborn Munchlax finally lets you capture it after the fifth try, or how some puzzles actually make you stop and think about which Pokémon abilities to use. The Japanese version adds some extra flair, though you might need a guide if you’re not fluent. Definitely a hidden gem if you’re tired of the usual Pokémon formula.
