Game Overview

Pokemon Ruby came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. It was part of a generation that really pushed the hardware, with a bigger world and more color than the earlier games. You could feel the ambition in the way the region sprawled out, with routes that looped back on themselves and weather that actually changed how you moved.

You play as a kid who sets out to collect Pokemon, challenge gym leaders, and eventually take on the Elite Four. The core loop involves exploring tall grass and caves to find wild Pokemon, battling them to weaken and catch them, then training your team to handle tougher opponents. Two big additions were double battles, which forced you to think about type matchups and team synergy in a whole new way, and the introduction of Pokemon abilities and natures, which added a layer of strategy to building your team. The game moves at a steady pace, though some of the water routes later on can feel a bit long. It feels like a real adventure, where every new patch of grass could hold a surprise.
