Predator came out on the NES in 1987, developed by Capcom. It was part of that wave of licensed games trying to capture the feel of a movie, and it stood out for its strange mix of action styles. You played as Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer, the character Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed, dropped into a hostile jungle.
You control Dutch through side-scrolling jungle levels, shooting at enemy soldiers and camouflaged Predators with an assault rifle that has unlimited ammo. The main goal is to find and destroy the Predator's ship before it can escape. The game shifts dramatically for its boss fights, switching to a first-person perspective where you must dodge energy orbs and target a cloaked Predator. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is punishing, especially during these disorienting first-person segments. It feels like a desperate, uneven fight for survival where you are always outmatched.
