Game Overview

Ranma Nibunnoichi - Gu Choki Ougi Jaanken came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Atelier Double. It was one of those many anime tie-in games from that era, trying to capture the show's chaotic energy on a cartridge. You didn't see a ton of them really stand out, but this one had its own strange little identity.

You control Ranma Saotome, moving through side-scrolling stages to rescue Akane from a rival school. The main gimmick is the rock-paper-scissors combat system; each attack corresponds to one of the three throws, creating a constant game of prediction and counter-attacks. You explore levels, fight groups of enemies, and face off against bosses who also use the same mechanics. The pacing is fairly brisk, though some enemy patterns can feel cheap if you guess wrong. It feels like a silly, slightly janky brawler where your success depends more on reading the opponent than on pure button mashing.
