Game Overview

I picked up Ratatouille on the Nintendo DS back in 2007, a game published by THQ that came out alongside the movie. It was one of those licensed titles that felt right at home on the handheld, offering a mix of platforming and cooking that tried to use the touch screen in a meaningful way. The DS was full of experiments like that, games that weren't necessarily system sellers but gave you something different to do between classes or on a short trip.

You play as Remy the rat, navigating through kitchens and other environments, avoiding human chefs and hazards. The main goal is to progress through the story by completing stages, which often involve a combination of light platforming, sneaking, and cooking minigames. Signature mechanics include using the stylus to chop ingredients with quick slashes, stir pots in circular motions, and flip food at the right moment to avoid burning it. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some of the cooking sequences can be surprisingly demanding until you memorize the timing. It feels tactile and occasionally frantic, especially when you're trying to plate a dish while avoiding being spotted.
