I picked up Ratatouille for the Nintendo DS back in 2007, a game published by THQ that came out alongside the Pixar movie. It was one of those licensed titles that showed up everywhere on the DS, a system packed with touchscreen experiments and quick adaptations of family films. You control Remy the rat, navigating through kitchens and sewers, avoiding human chefs and collecting ingredients. The main goal is to become a great chef by completing cooking stages and platforming challenges. Signature mechanics include using the stylus to chop, stir, and flip food in rhythm-based minigames, and guiding Remy through obstacle-filled environments using the d-pad. The pacing shifts between frantic cooking under time pressure and slower exploration; it can get surprisingly tough when you're managing multiple pans or precise jumps. It feels like a quirky, tactile mix of action and simulation that makes good use of the DS's unique features.
