Game Overview

Okay, so Real Bout Fatal Fury (or Real Bout Garou Densetsu if you're going by the Japanese name) is one of those Neo Geo fighters that just feels right. No complicated story modes or endless tutorials—just pick your fighter and start throwing hands. The roster’s got all the usual suspects like Terry Bogard and Geese Howard, but the real fun is in how weighty the hits feel. When you land a clean combo, the screen shakes just enough to make it satisfying without being over the top.

What I love is how the ring-outs work—knock someone through the barrier at the edge of the stage, and you’ll fight in this secondary area with different hazards. It keeps matches from feeling repetitive, and there’s always that moment where you’re scrambling not to get cornered. The AI isn’t shy about punishing mistakes, either. First time I played, I got wrecked by Joe Higashi’s tornado kicks because I kept jumping in like an idiot.

It’s got that classic SNK pixel art too—big, chunky sprites with smooth animations. Mai’s fans actually look like they hurt, and Andy’s shoryuken-style uppercut has this satisfying snap to it. If you’re into fighters that reward timing over button mashing, this one’s a solid pick. Just don’t blame me when you lose three rounds in a row to Ryo’s fireballs.
