Capcom released Resident Evil for the Sega Saturn in 1997, a time when the console was struggling to keep up with its competitors. You control either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, members of a special police unit trapped inside a mansion swarming with the undead. Your main goal is simply to survive and uncover the sinister secrets of the estate. The game is built on screen by screen exploration, managing a very limited inventory, and solving obtuse puzzles that often require backtracking through dangerous halls. Every encounter is a calculated risk, as ammunition and healing items are scarce, making even a single zombie a legitimate threat. It feels like a constant, low grade panic, a test of nerves where every saved bullet is a small victory.
