Resident Evil on the Sega Saturn is where survival horror really kicked off for me. You pick either Jill or Chris—Jill’s got more inventory space, Chris hits harder, so it’s a toss-up—and suddenly you’re trapped in this creepy mansion full of zombies that groan like they’ve got indigestion. The doors take forever to open, which somehow makes it scarier.

You’ll spend half your time backtracking for keys and puzzle pieces, the other half panicking because you’ve got six bullets left and three hunters blocking the hallway. The Saturn version throws in Battle Mode, where you blast through monster-packed rooms against the clock—it’s brutal, but weirdly satisfying when you pull it off. Just don’t expect to sleep well after playing this at night.
