Game Overview

Rockman EXE 5 DS - Twin Leaders came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005, developed and published by Capcom. It was part of that early wave of DS titles that really tried to make use of both screens, back when developers were still figuring out what the hardware could do. This one was an enhanced port of a Game Boy Advance game, but it added enough to feel like its own thing on the new system.

You play as either Lan Hikari or his NetNavi, MegaMan, switching between exploring the real world on the top screen and diving into the cyber network on the bottom. Your main goal is to stop a new wave of cyber terrorism by battling viruses and other Navis. The combat happens on a 3x6 grid; you use a custom folder of battle chips, which you select in real time during a fight, and timing your button presses right can chain attacks together. The dual screens let you see both the real world and the net at once, which changes how you approach puzzles and enemy encounters. It moves at a pretty quick pace, and some of the later boss fights can get tough if you haven't built a good chip folder. Playing it feels like managing two urgent tasks at the same time, and pulling off a perfect chip combo is always satisfying.
