Game Overview

SD Battle Oozumou - Heisei Hero Basho came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by TOSE and published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of late-era NES games that leaned into weird, specific Japanese licenses, mashing up popular tokusatsu heroes and kaiju into a sumo wrestling framework. You don't see many games like it, even from that time.

You control a super-deformed version of a hero or monster, like Ultraman or Godzilla, and face off against another in a small sumo ring. The main objective is to either push your opponent out of the ring or deplete their health bar. Signature mechanics include a chargeable super attack unique to each character and a clumsy, momentum-based shoving system where mistiming a push can send you stumbling backward instead. The pacing is fast and a little unpredictable, with matches often ending in a few frantic seconds. It feels like trying to steer a bumper car through a food fight.
