SD Gundam G Generation DS is one of those games that makes you wish your DS had a bigger screen—because once you start, you won’t want to stop. It’s a chibi-style tactical RPG where you collect and upgrade mobile suits from across the Gundam universe, then throw them into grid-based battles that actually require some thought. At first, I just picked my favorite mechs for looks, but turns out you really need to balance your squad unless you want to get wrecked by Zakus in the third mission.

The customization goes deeper than you’d expect for a DS game—you can tweak pilots, swap weapons, and even combine units mid-battle for flashy team attacks. Some of the animations are surprisingly slick for tiny sprites, especially when you pull off a finishing move. If you’ve ever wanted to pit classic RX-78 against later UC timeline suits, this is basically a sandbox for that exact fantasy.

Fair warning: the menus are a bit cramped, and the English translation has that classic early-2000s "we tried our best" energy. But if you’re into Gundam or tactical RPGs, it’s weirdly easy to lose an afternoon to this one.
