Game Overview

Secret of Evermore came out in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, developed by Square. It was one of the few action RPGs from that studio made by an American team, and it stood out for its offbeat humor and setting. You play as a kid from a small town who gets zapped into a strange, shifting world with his dog.

You control the boy and his canine companion, who can transform into different breeds depending on the era you're in. The goal is to find a way back home by exploring four distinct time periods, each with its own monsters and environments. Combat is real time; you swing your sword or use a crossbow, and you can craft alchemical spells by combining ingredients you find. The pacing is deliberate, with plenty of backtracking and resource management. It feels like a solitary, slightly eerie adventure, even when you're playing with a friend.
