You and your shape-shifting dog explore weird time periods, mixing potions and bonking monsters—it’s janky but full of strange charm. That moody soundtrack still haunts me years later.

Game Overview

Secret of Evermore came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996, developed by SquareSoft. It was one of those later SNES titles that tried to do something a little different, with a unique setting and a more experimental feel compared to many of its contemporaries.

You control a boy and his dog, who can transform based on the time period you're in. The goal is to find your way home by exploring four distinct worlds, each with its own monsters and environments. You fight with swords, spears, and bows, and you also mix alchemical formulas to cast spells. The pacing is deliberate, with plenty of screen-by-screen exploration and some tricky enemy patterns to learn. It feels like a personal, slightly odd adventure that sticks with you.
