Game Overview

Secret of Evermore came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996, developed by SquareSoft. It was one of the later SNES titles, arriving when the system was still going strong but the next generation was on the horizon. The game stood out for being one of the few action RPGs from Square made by their American team, offering a different flavor compared to their usual Japanese-developed fantasy epics.

You control a young boy and his shape-shifting dog, traveling through four distinct time periods, from prehistoric jungles to a futuristic city. Your main goal is to find a way back home after a science experiment goes wrong. Gameplay involves real-time combat with swords, spears, and eventually guns, plus a unique alchemy system where you gather ingredients to cast spells. You explore areas screen by screen, fight monsters, solve environmental puzzles, and upgrade your gear in towns. The pacing is deliberate, with some challenging boss fights and resource management that keeps you thinking. It feels like a solitary, slightly strange journey where every new area brings a fresh set of rules and surprises.
